Grimore Nier, which is basically a compilation of all the things you can’t quite understand about the game.
Long story short, neither Devola nor Popola are humans. They are “Androids”, artificial beings created to look over the Replicants, which in turn are soulless shells created to purify a disease stricken Earth (it’s a messy story). The “soul” of the Replicants, called Gestalt, was kept on a slumber for as long as the land remained contaminated, and the twins were tasked to look over them, replacing the Replicants as they died and waiting for the time they could merge the empty, mindless bodies with their souls.
This plan had to be slightly altered when the Replicants started to gain self conscience, but it remained largely unchanged in the end. It was only when the sleeping Gestalt seemed to “relapse” and turn violent that things went south. The newly awakened Gestalt, nicknamed “Shades” became a threat to life, and the Replicants took up the task to eliminate them, with the twins silently watching over the ensuing violence. It would come the time that one of the Replicants, Nier, would rise among the others and make a decisive move against the Shades, fueled by the need to save her sick daughter, Yonah. Popola and Devola would aid him with quests in order to reach the castle of the Shadowlord, the one controlling the Shades to attack, and Nier’s own Shadow. Seeing how Nier had drawn dangerously close to the Shadowlord, both Devola and Popola decided to stop him, only for Devola to be killed by him, and Popola losing her mind over the death of her twin, killing herself and one of Nier’s companions in the process.
Personality:
Popola is a rather complex being that mainly operates in two different levels.
On the outside and for most people she is a nice, soft spoken and polite woman, offering something of a contrast with her twin Devola usually more lively and outspoken. Popola has a flair for organizing and leading though, and she is a very effective town “major” or sorts, as well as the library manager, and the one (besides her sister) capable of read most of the books in there. She also takes care of children that have ended up without families, and is open to speak with whoever approaches the library, where she spends most of her time and apparently resides. Shown to care for the wellbeing of Nier in several occasions thorough the game, she is good friends with Yonah, usually taking care of her while Nier is out killing things. She is even mentioned to be moderately shy when it comes to sing in front of others, needing a “special drink” to overcome her shyness.
At the same time, however, Popola keeps a completely detached and strictly scientific eye on everyone in the town, of not in the entire world left to her and her sister to watch over. This usually doesn’t involve her doing much, but the twins are tasked to replace Replicants, as well as to keep them for ever finding out the truth until they are ready to merge with their Gestalt half again. While it’s unknown how much have they done, Popola and Devola are effectively in control of everything for most of the game.
There is also the fact that Popola isn’t a “real” person, but an android; this isn’t expanded much at any time, but given the mix of magic and science is possible that the twins are organic beings created differently than humans, thus being incredibly long lived, yet not necessarily mechanical, as Devola does bleed when injured by Nier; they could very well be really advanced robots though, but neither of them would enter into details about it anyway.. Because of their nature though, Popola and Devola regards themselves as “emotionless”, knowing nothing of what means to feel like a human being. That combined with eight hundred years of observation had finally created a sense of envy and hatred towards humanity, as they, incomplete as they were, could feel and experience in ways they could only imagine. Although it might end up sounding as a contradiction, it was perhaps this that allowed them to grow beyond their programming, and by the time of their deaths the twins had started to exhibit a range of emotions, apparently real and not the facade they had been putting up until there.

Arcana: Moon.
Justification:
Doubt: Of her own work, of her lack of emotions and mostly about Nier’s quest being wrong; she ended up playing in both sides, as she helped the man and tried to stop him.
Romanticism: Being made without emotions on her own, Popola has certain attraction for emotions, perhaps as a way to compensate for her own short comings. Neither of the sisters are shown to involve themselves romantically with others, but they make clear that one exists for the other, as they can’t live like humans, the twins need each other to remain sane.
Deception: Even though it’s not obvious to anybody but herself and her sister, Popola has lived a life of lying and manipulating others, perhaps for their own good, or perhaps for the twins’. She isn’t particularly proud of it, but being that her task she never had much of a chance to complain. All in all, secrecy and lies are a intimate part of her.

So it seems like I have been stranded in a strange land, sporting what I can only imagine is a weird set of clothes. This is all a bit intimidating, but I belive that if I have been given the means to communicate things can’t be that bad in the end.
This might come as a weird request, but if somebody could give me the present day, month and year I would be very grateful. My name is Popola, by the way; hopefully whoever replies to this will be capable on aiding me.
